About Me

My name is Amy Swallow.  I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and Licensed Certified Art Therapist (LCAT) in the state of Oregon, as well as a nationally Board Certified Art Therapist (ATR-BC).  I have been in practice as a professional art therapist since earning my MA in Art Therapy Counseling at Marylhurst University in 2008. In that time, my work has focused primarily on serving older adults and individuals with dementia, traumatic brain injury, developmental disabilities, and physical disabilities.

I founded Opal & Sage Art Therapy, LLC in 2015 because I saw a need in the Portland community for accessible, adaptable, and person-centered art therapy services. Opal & Sage welcomes adult clients of all ages and abilities, with mobile services available to those who benefit from sessions in their home or center of care.  I work with people on issues such as grief and loss, adjustment to life transitions, chronic illness, anxiety, depression, relationship challenges, identity and self-esteem.

I am passionate about the healing and transformative power of art and I believe that art therapy is an especially versatile, engaging, and effective modality for addressing mental health needs.  I am honored to support people in their efforts to express themselves creatively, explore feelings and experiences, and deepen self-understanding.

Opal & Sage gets its name from the symbolic meaning of the stone and plant.  Opals are associated with emotional expressiveness and creativity.  Sage is known for its healing and purifying properties.  Together, these symbols represent the powerful process of art therapy and the growth, healing, and insight that can result from creative self-expression.
